Saudi’s Maaden Ammonia III Project Site Completes Installation of CO2 Absorber,
HP/LP Flash Vessel

Saudi’s Maaden Ammonia III site completed installation of the site’s core processes CO2 Absorber and HP/LP Flash Vessel on August 21 and August 31, respectively. The CO2 Absorber and HP/LP Flash Vessel are devices for removing the CO2 generated during the pyrolysis of hydrocarbon (raw material of ammonia) and which must be removed as it disrupts the chemical reaction of the catalyst used for ammonia synthesis. The installed CO2 Absorber absorbs CO2, an impurity contained in hydrogen, using the special solution a-MDEA of BASF. HP/LP Flash Vessel is a device that removes the CO2 absorbed in the a-MDEA using the flash effect by pressure difference. The project involves building a 3,300-ton ammonia production plant per day using natural gas as raw material in Ras Al-Khair in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The project started on Nov. 1, 2018, and it is slated to be completed in Dec. 2021.
